The position now is that Japan (in besieging Tsing Tao)has practically forced the hand of Great Britain. It is the beginning of the end of British, if not European, influence in the Far East.

It is not easy to believe that Japan acted in the final stage with the full consent of England… It seems impossible.

England has suffered a severer blow in this disgraceful episode than anywhere else in the Far East during the past 100 years.
