吾年来志力之薄弱极矣，即戒纸烟一事，屡戒屡复为之，真是懦夫无志之为！吾去国以来，虽滴酒不入口，然纸烟之恶影响仍不少。赫氏之书曰：
"I am absolutely determined to transmit undiminished to my posterity this heritage which is mine."（Before Dawn, Act I. p. 52）
记此为座右之铭。自今日始，决不再吸纸烟或烟斗之类。今日之言，墨在纸上，不可漫灭，吾不得自欺。
