偶检旧箧,得年来所藏各报之《讽刺画》(讽刺之名殊不当,以其不专事讽刺也),即“时事画”(Cartoon),展玩数四,不忍弃去,择其佳者附载于是册,而弁以序曰:
西国报章多有“时事画”一栏,聘名手主之。其所画或讽刺时政,或褒贬人物,几于不着一字而利如锋霜,爽如哀梨,能令人喜,亦能令人叹息,其为画也,盖自成一种美术。欧美二洲以此艺著者无数,而其真能独树一帜自成宗派者,则亦复寥落无几。盖其为画也,亦犹为文然,贵以神胜,以意胜者次之;其但纪事实,炫技巧,供读者一笑而已者,不足尚也。欧陆诸国之名作吾所见殊少,不敢妄为月旦。今所选多英美两国之作,于美得骆宾生(Boardman Robinson)及漫诺(Minor)二家,于英得《彭箕报》(Punch)之作者,皆为此道上乘,故首列此三家。其稍逊者及大陆南美诸邦之作者,亦择尤附焉。抑吾之为此集,初不徒以自娱也,诚以此艺之在吾国,乃未有作者,区区之怀,将以之绍介于国人,俾后之作者有所观感取法焉,亦采风问俗者所有责也。
第一集 骆宾生氏
(1)前年Titanic舟与冰山相触,沉于大西洋,死者无数,骆氏作此图哀之。写乡间老父母翻看报纸,寻其儿女存亡消息,题为《单上无名》,用意最深刻动人。此何啻一篇万言哀辞,真绝作也!
(2)劳动工人吁天图,为英国煤矿工人罢工者作。
(3)刺英国暴烈派之女权党,屡用暴烈方法,自毁其运动。
(4)一九一二[年]之大选举。白来恩问:“喂,省长先生,我们民主党总统不得连任的政纲怎么样了?”威尔逊说:“啊!你瞧,天气真清朗呀!”
(5)同上题。图左角日历为“十一月二日”,离大选举只有两天了。威尔逊还在踌躇说:“让我想想看。对于进口税的问题,什么态度最稳妥呢?”骆氏为共和党机关报New York Tribune作画,故反对威尔逊,然其言何婉而雅也!
(6)选举之结果,民主党全胜,共和党大败,骆氏于揭晓之晨作此画,写“申叔”(Uncle Sam,代表美国)早起看报,微笑道:“啊!也罢!我想,四个年头我还受得了。”此种风趣又可见西洋政争之态度非东方政客所能梦见。
(7)英儒勃来思(著《民主政治》者)为英使美,美人敬爱之。氏以老辞职,将去美,骆氏为作此。
(8)巴尔干风云之结果。“快要开谈判了。”
(9)纽约省长色尔叟在演说台上大声说:“我色尔叟不服侍别的老板,只有色尔叟自己!”他的身背后站着纽约民主党的后台老板(Boss)茂肥用指头点他道:“你的独奏唱完了,就上楼来。”此稍近于虐谑矣。然何其妙也!(参看卷三第一四则)
(10)纽约工厂有童稚工人,晨四时即动工,夜深始出者。骆氏为作此。右所载十图皆骆氏所作。
第二集 漫诺氏
(11)为罢工之矿工作也。
(12)中国人之新神像:为中国革命作。图为一中国人手持自由之神,审视把玩。此图出,各国争转载之,漫氏之名遂大著。
(13)未有己不正而能正人者。(参看卷三第一四则)虎视者为茂肥(Murphy)。伏地者纽约省长Sulzer也。
(14)威尔逊宣言不用金圆外交政策。
第三集 《彭箕报》之时事画(英伦)
(15)武装和平。(一)
(16)巴尔干战后之风云再起矣。
(17)突厥人乘巴尔干诸国互斗,复得亚得里亚堡,列强虽恶之,而无如何也。
(18)“少年突厥党”之失败。突之武人党不能逞志于意大利,乃逞志于“少年党”,故刺之。
(19)威尔逊之墨西哥政策。不羁之马,圉人苦矣。

第四集 英伦他种报章之时事画

第五集 大陆诸国之时事画
(24)德国社会党之大捷。一九一二年,社会党员在下议院得大多数,其人大半多工人贫民也。一人问:“你在卑田院里吗?”一人答:“不是的;我在国会里。”
(25)中国之自由神。此图疑本于漫氏之作,何其相似也!
(26)德皇与罗斯福,两人皆持帝国主义者也。
(27)意突之战。《马太传》二章曰:“耶稣生时,有东方高士远来造耶路撒冷,言曰:‘犹太人之王何在耶?吾曹在东方见其星矣,今远来瞻拜之。’耶稣所生地名贝司伦(Bethlehen),诸高士循星所指,得其处。入门,见媚利抱耶稣,则皆伏地膜拜顶礼,解囊献黄金名香为礼,欢忭而去。”此图即用此事以讽耶教徒之不重人道而逞兵于回教之国也。图中写意人攻击特利波里正急,空中一弹飞起,其下回教徒见之,相谓曰,此岂贝司伦之星也?
(28)德人眼中之罗斯福、塔夫脱选举决斗。
(29)小狗吠巨灵。德之社会党首领贝北尔新死,世界争称颂其人,独守旧党之《邮报》诋之。
(30)罗斯福、塔夫脱之决斗。
(31)世界共和国欢迎新中国之图。此图亦极有名,世界争载之。
(32)突厥之运命。问卜者曰:“不久可以有和平了吗?”卜者答:“我只见一个‘三’,但看不准是三天、三月、三年,或是三百年。”
(33)俄人对突厥之同情。
(34)补月图。新月为突之国徽,即金瓯之意。
(35)一年外交之失败(一九一二)。
(36)墨西哥人之自负。
第六集 第二流之美国“时事画”
(37)此亦吊“Titanic”舟之惨劫也。
(38)同题,参观第一图。“Titanic”为海行第一大舟,自负为不沉。
(39)罗斯福之趋时。此为一九一二年大选时期时事画之最佳者。罗斯福组织进步党,《党纲》中包罗一切最时髦之主张。此图画一个冰淇淋店的柜台,后面是各种果汁瓶,写着“劳工权利”、“罢免法官”、“女子参政”(中间);“统治托拉斯”、“创制权与复决权”、“社会主义”、“保护天然富源”(左);“复议法庭判决”、“委员制之市政”、“人口问题”(右),真是“应有尽有”了,罗氏问柜台外的顾客道:“您要什么?”
右时事画卅九,皆生平所见之最佳者。七月十一日适之记。
今日审视昨夜所弃之时事画,觉不无沧海遗珠之憾,遂增入若干,成续集。
(40)骆宾生氏作。美国近年颇主解散大托拉斯或严取缔之。有许多托拉斯已自行解散。此记贝尔及西盟两电业公司自行解散一案也。
(41)《臣门如市》。此邦大托拉斯往往以金钱收买官吏议员为之作走狗。此指美孚公司也。漫诺氏作。
(42)英人Sir John Tenniel作。此君为《彭箕》作画凡五十年,去年始死,年九十四。此为此君最后之作。作于二十世纪开幕之第二日,祝新世纪(手中婴孩)之和平也。车上武士为战神,老人为时神(Time)手抱二十世纪,其旁立,和平之神也。
(43)“门罗主义”之受福者。墨之乱,美人不许欧人干涉,而美人私助微耶之党,输入军械。此图写微耶献花们罗之墓,所以志谢也。
(44)意突之战,消息隔绝,两国报章各自言大捷,皆闭门造新闻者也。(法国《笑报》)
(45)《乐观者》。此图似嘲似誉,极有风致;不知何氏所作。
右所集时事画四十五幅,计美人所作者二十幅,英十一,德六,荷二,奥二,意、法、墨各一。十二日适之又记。
